Keegan stared through the peephole at Detroit as the man banged on his hotel room door. A tiny part of him considered not answering. He’d never been able to hold a grudge. It was a little aggravating, actually. He’d always been the type to get over things quickly. Keegan was too empathetic. He usually saw all sides. Detroit cared about him. He thought he understood what Keegan needed, and he’d tried to make it happen. That was sweet. Ugh. Keegan opened the door.
“I’m sorry.”
At Detroit’s immediate apology, Keegan’s shoulders fell. He opened the door wider. “Come in.” Even Keegan heard the petulance in his tone.
Detroit stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him. Keegan’s annoyance ratcheted up another notch as he got a good look at the man. The dark circles beneath his eyes and the way his hair stood on end said he hadn’t slept at all, and he was still hot. No doubt Keegan looked every bit as shitty as he felt. Yet here Detroit was—tight t-shirt and jeans that protested his muscular thighs. Life wasn’t fair.
“While talking things over with Payne last night, I realized some things.”
Keegan dropped onto the bed and stared at Detroit in agitated expectance. “Such as?”
“You haven’t known me long,” Detroit answered, as if it explained everything.
“Okay.” Really. That was all Keegan had. His head hurt too badly to try for more.
Without invitation, Detroit climbed into Keegan’s bed. He sat so close their thighs touched. Up close, he was even hotter. Keegan thought he hated him a little. “You only know the me that I’ve shown you, because it was nice to have a friend who’s only known me for as long as I’ve been happy,” Detroit said, still not making sense. Thankfully, he didn’t make Keegan dig for clarification. “See, you said yesterday that I don’t understand because no one has ever been ashamed of me. You’re wrong. Everyone has always been ashamed of me, including me.” He had Keegan’s attention. “I didn’t tell you I’m married to Micah’s dad, because I was his secret for a long time. It was nice being friends with someone who didn’t know I fell in love with my best friend’s dad and lied nonstop to everyone. I liked having a friend who didn’t know how that fucked me up. Someone who didn’t know how it almost killed me.” He set his arm on Keegan’s thigh, forearm up, revealing angry-looking scars Keegan hadn’t noticed before now. Keegan traced the ragged edges with his fingertip. He had no words. Detroit covered Keegan’s hand with his. “It’s not been long enough yet for me to forget what it was like to be alone, drowning, and searching for any escape. I shouldn’t have sprung Omen on you. I just don’t want you to be alone, unhappy, and searching for any escape. Not if I can help.”
Keegan’s eyes burned. He kept his gaze locked on their joined hands so Detroit wouldn’t see the tears in his eyes. Not once had he thought of suicide, but he couldn’t deny he was tired.
